How Dark Phoenix’s Third Act Was Retooled In Reshoots

Dark Phoenix is a storyline that fans have been wary of from the very beginning. Many went into X-Men: The Last Stand with the best hopes, but after being burnt by that, many realized just how ambitious adapting that story is for the big screen. Additionally, one key component of that story working is that we get a sense that Jean Grey herself and the rest had a solid relationship with one another. While it remains to be seen whether or not that will be the case here, fans do have one main reason for concern.

While production for the film way back in October 2017, the movie was pushed back to make room for reshoots. In the past, there were comments about how they needed to go in and rework the third act, but according to a new report from EW, that change had mostly to do with changing the location of the third act from space to a military train.

“I think the biggest challenge is modulating the film so that we have the big scale and visual-effects action that these movies require, but balancing that in a way that feels calibrated with the drama,” director Simon Kinberg told the outlet. “You have these big space sequences and trains flying through the air and people firing lightning bolts, but you also have a lot of emotional, four-page dramatic dialogue scenes.”

So, from the sound of it, Kinberg’s ambition of a space-set third act made things difficult — especially since it was his first movie. But that wasn’t the only change. They also worked to make Phoenix herself to be more “cosmic” and less “flamy.”
