Game Of Thrones Director Says Upcoming Battle Of Winterfell Will Be Survival Horror

You may be aware that Game of Thrones is about to broadcast its biggest battle yet this week in Episode 3 of Season 8. The battle in question will be the Battle of Winterfell between all the forces of good, against the unrelenting army of the dead. Whether the Night King is leading that army is a question I am eager to find out, if you want to know why check the related link further down the page.

The director of this weeks episode is Miguel Sapochnik, who also directed “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter,” which happen to be three of my favorite episodes. EW caught up with him and whilst he isn’t giving away any spoilers for the upcoming episode, he did talk about how he approached directing such an action-oriented episode and one of the genres he turned to was Survival Horror. Here is the quote.

“This is survival horror. That’s the whole episode for me. What we realized is you look at like Assault on Precinct 13 — movies where a group is under siege — usually there’s an ensemble cast and a central theme in there. So I’ve been trying to work out whose story this is. That’s different than the stuff I’ve done previously which was generally from Jon’s perspective. Here I’ve got 20-some cast members and everyone would like it to be their scene. That’s complicated because I find the best battle sequences are when you have a strong point of view, and here the point of view is objective even when you go from one person’s story to another. Because when you’re cutting back and forth, [the perspective] becomes objective whether you want it to or not. I keep thinking, “Whose story am I telling right now? And what restrictions does that place on me that become a good thing?””

I really am looking forward to this weeks episode, but at a whopping 82 minutes long, I may well have to wait until Monday to watch it as I live in the UK, so it shows at 2 am my time for the first showing. Ah, sleep, who needs it anyway?
