It’s now a story that’s become a part of movie mythology. Somehow, an entire fandom bullied a movie studio into changing the look of the lead character. Following the backlash to the design of Sonic the Hedgehog in the upcoming Paramount movie, director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter to announce they would be going back to the drawing board on Sonic’s design. A new trailer has since aired, and the Blue Blur looks about as good as one could have expected.
But how much did that cost? After all, it can’t have been cheap to replace the lead from the ground up, could it? Well, one tweet from the user RiseFallNick claimed that the redesign cost $35 million, pushing the budget from $90 million to $125 million, but IndieWire has a different story.

According to the outlet, the cost of the redesign is actually less than $5 million. Their source stated that the only complete VFX work done at the time of the trailer dropping were those shots featuring Sonic in the trailer. This meant that it wasn’t necessarily about replacing months and months of finished CG work, but about replacing the mostly-unfinished work. Yes, it cost extra time and money, but not nearly as much as that original Twitter user indicated.
The user has since responded, conceding that this may be true, but also indicating that this doesn’t account for money lost for merch, ads, date change, marketing, etc.
