How Ocean’s 8 Got Its Title

I know, I know. It’s kind of a dumb headline. The answer seems obvious, right? Ocean’s 8 got its title because we have the titular Debbie Ocean putting together a gang of thieves that will make up a total of eight, including herself. It’s the same way we got Ocean’s 11, so it only makes sense we’d end up with eight, yes?

Well, believe it or not, the filmmakers put in just a little bit more thought into it than thought (though not a whole lot). Pretty much, they wanted to have enough characters to make the film dynamic, but not too many that they begin to bleed into Ocean’s 11 territory. Plus, they wanted to make sure there was room to grow.

Here’s what director Gary Ross said:

“It was Soderbergh’s idea. He said we can do eight, nine, and 10 — after that we’ll be sick of them.”

In true Hollywood form, they’ve made sure to ensure the potential expansion of this world — though we’re sure this flick will stand alone just fine.

What do you think of their approach to naming Ocean’s 8? Are you disheartened by the fact that potential sequels played a role in its naming? Should they have just called it Ocean’s 3 and been done with it? Let us know down below!
