How That Frozen Short Helped Kindle Enthusiasm For Frozen 2

Later this week, Disney will be making its own history. In its many decades in business, they have never had a theatrically-released musical sequel. Sure, they’ve had sequels like The Rescuers Down Under and Ralph Breaks the Internet, but those movies aren’t classified as musical animated movies, so they really don’t count.

With Frozen II, we’ll be seeing more song and dance numbers all on the big screen. No more direct-to-video business with these guys. There is undoubtedly a lot of expectations this thing has to live up to, but it’s always cool to hear how it all started.

Given how well the first movie did at the box office, a sequel seemed inevitable, but when did the process actually start? Jennifer Lee, one of the film’s co-directors, recently spoke at a press conference where LRM Online was in attendance, and here’s what she had to say about that, and how that Frozen short in front of Coco helped get them excited for the sequel.

“[Frozen II] started about a year after the [first] film came out. We did a small short. When we saw the characters animated again, we got emotional and we said we missed them…and this one question kept coming up. ‘Why does Elsa have powers?’”

From there, the questions steamrolled. “Where would these girls go next?” “What happened to their parents?” They kept piling up for the filmmakers to the point where they needed to be addressed.

“We naively said, ‘we have more story to tell. We’re not done with this world’…There’s never been a second musical to a feature film. We were going into the unknown completely. We just knew that we loved them and wanted to be with them and couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen.”

Frozen II is the byproduct of all those questions, and based on all that I’ve heard, this is a film that revels in worldbuilding and character-building, so if those kinds of questions excite you, then get ready for a good time.
