How The Fans Saved Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again With Creative Overhaul According To Charlie Cox And Vincent D’Onofrio

How the fans saved Daredevil: Born Again according to stars Cox and D-Onofrio. Hello LRM readers! My name is André Joseph and I’m a new contributor to the site. I’ve been an avid visitor of LRM since my college years. So it’s quite the honor to contribute the latest news in Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and more. On occasion, you might even see some pieces on some of my other favorite franchises such as Robocop, Ghostbusters, Terminator, and almost anything ’80s and ’90s.

Onto some recent Marvel news that caught my eye today: While attending a panel discussion at Fan Expo Boston 2024, Daredevil: Born Again stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio revealed how they convinced Marvel Studios to revamp the upcoming Disney+ series to be more in line with the original Netflix series. Initially, Marvel shied away from the Netflix continuity as CEO Kevin Feige had no creative input. While Cox and D’Onofrio reprised their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin respectfully in Phase 4 projects, the studio did not extend an offer to Daredevil co-stars Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll to return much to the dismay of Marvel fans.

Daredevil: Born Again’s Creative Struggles

Upon shooting Born Again in early 2023 with showrunners, Matt Corman and Chris Ord, Cox and D’Onofrio realized the soft reboot direction of the series was not working. Born Again reportedly went in a more episodic direction rather than the serial format of the Netflix series. Cox detailed his discussions with Marvel about the need for change (per Popverse):

“Marvel had been incredibly open-minded and willing to correct course, and incredibly supportive. Early on, we were trying something that was a bit different, and very quickly they were able to identify that wasn’t maybe working as well as it could’ve done. Where we are now, I think I can speak for both of us that we feel very happy.”

Marvel let Corman and Ord go after filming six episodes of the inaugural season. Dario Scardapane, a former writer on Netflix’s The Punisher, took over show running duties with Loki: Season 2 directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead helming the remaining episodes. The earlier footage from the Corman/Ord period will be inserted into the reshoots.

After Marvel’s creative overhaul last year, the Netflix continuity officially became canon when Henson and Woll returned as Froggy Nelson and Karen Page. D’Onofrio added how they put the fans first when addressing Marvel with the change in creative:

“The best thing about the situation is what Charlie just said about the bosses at Marvel, and also the fact that Charlie and I were a team. We just supported each other in everything that each other wanted, whether we were in the scene or not. Whether it featured our characters, it didn’t matter. As a team, Charlie and I considered the story and the fans. Literally, I’m not shitting you. You guys, we considered you constantly and brought you up constantly.”
