Hunchback Of Notre Dame Remake Reportedly On The Chopping Block

In a saga marked by both triumphs and setbacks, Disney’s live-action remakes of its beloved animated classics have struck box office gold. Memorable hits like Maleficient, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin have garnered substantial attention and revenue over the years. But recently the box office gold magic has been kind to the recent Disney live-action remakes like Mulan, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan and Wendy has Disney’s top exec rethinking the future of the live-action remakes.

Recent reports and clues have pointed that the live-action rendition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been put on the chopping block. The project was announced in 2019, and was set to be written by David Henry Hwang, featuring a soundtrack crafted by the renowned duo Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

Mandeville Productions was slated to produce the film, with added involvement from Josh Gad, who not only had a hand in production but was also rumored to take on the role of Quasimodo, the central character. Despite initial excitement, the project’s progress has been mired by various obstacles in recent years.

With the global pandemic, accompanied by studios recently cutting budgets of future projects, and subsequent industry-wide disruptions such as the writers’ and actors’ strikes, have collectively taken their toll. Amidst this turbulence, many film projects have faced delays or outright cancellations

Recent revelations from The DisInsider suggest that the remake has once again been relegated to the back burner. The report sugguests the catalyst for this shift in direction appears to be Bob Iger’s stance on the matter. Sources indicate that Iger holds reservations about the film and deems it outside the scope of Disney’s immediate priorities.

Disney’s recent track record with live-action remakes, such as Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy, and The Little Mermaid, suggests a waning audience interest in revisiting animated classics in this format. This trend aligns with a broader sentiment of skepticism toward such remakes. The current production of the live-action remake of Snow White and The Seven Dwarves is already facing backlash with its story treatment and casting. With the backlash already brewing from that project with the intricacies of The Hunchback of Notre Dame’s storyline, compound the project’s challenges.

While Disney’s slate of forthcoming projects remains impressive, including adaptations of Moana, Lilo & Stitch, and Hercules the status of the “Hunchback” remake remains uncertain. Official confirmation has yet to emerge, especially with the backdrop of ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes.
