Ian McKellen Interested In Again Playing Gandalf In Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings TV Series

Once a wizard, always a wizard.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings television series becomes closer to reality each day. There is a multi-season production commitment for the show, including potential spin-offs, which will start by exploring story-lines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring.

We don’t know if Gandalf will have a role in all this, though why wouldn’t he? He always seems to be up to something even when hobbits are not around to mess with. IF Gandalf is a set character, there is one actor who would like to play him… and he’s done it a few times before.

Appearing on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show over the weekend, McKellen was asked if it would bother him if another actor puts on his wizard hat:

“What do you mean, another Gandalf?

I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Unless this series is meant to be a prequel to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, it would seem odd to cast McKellen as Gandalf again in what would essentially be a reboot. So, we shall see if he is even offered the gig.
