Ian McShane Talks About The Upcoming Deadwood Film

For years fans of HBO’s western series, Deadwood, have waited, and hoped to hear news of the show’s return, or at the very least a film to give the characters a more proper sendoff than the conclusion the fans were given. Rumors popped up here and there, but just turned out to be talk.

All that chatter finally turned real when the Deadwood movie started filming in November of last year.  For as long as fans waited, once production started, things moved swiftly and the film will be out at the end of next month. Actor  Ian McShane plays fan favorite Al Swearingen, on the show. McShane recently spoke with Collider.

Deadwood we just finished. I saw it the other day. Tim and I had a few comments. I think it’s – yeah, it’s OK. Yeah, it’s good. Again it’s, you know, don’t expect an episodic piece. It’s difficult when you’ve gotta make a two hour movie of an episodic TV. But I think they got the setting right, they got the links right, and they got everybody back which is really great, ’cause they could have made you know, ‘Seth and Al ride the high country together!’ That wouldn’t have been Deadwood. That would just be me and Tim sort of catching it … this is [David] Milch Deadwood circa 10 years later. Statehood difficulty, characters have moved on; they’re a little changed which is great.”

I for one would absolutely watch a spinoff with Timothy Olyphant’s Seth Bullock and McShane’s Al Swearengen.

I have to say the first part of McShane’s quote doesn’t make me feel good about the film, after waiting more than 10 years, fans want better than “ok” . Though he does talk it up a bit toward the end, which gives me some comfort. He’s also correct on how big of a deal it was to get everyone back. The Deadwood movie premieres on HBO May 31.

You can check out an official synopsis for the film below

“In the Deadwood film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”
