Idris Elba almost got to sing Beauty and the Beast‘s best song, and it would have been all about him! People had an interview with Elba, where he revealed he auditioned for Disney’s live-action adaptation of the animated classic:
“I honestly love musicals. I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast. I really did, for Gaston. I called and said, ‘Listen, I want in!’ So somewhere they have a tape of me singing.”
Man, would I love to see that. Elba is no stranger to Disney, appearing in all three Thor films including this November’s Thor: Ragnarok, and even Avengers: Age of Ultron. He also voiced characters in Pixar’s Finding Dory and Disney Animation’s Zootopia, in addition to voicing Shere Khan in the recent live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. One hopes it is only a matter of time before Elba makes his way to the final corner of Disney, the Star Wars universe.
As for whether or not Elba resents Luke Evans for landing the role of Gaston instead, Elba said:
“No, only a little bit. No! I love you Luke, you know that.”
