Idris Elba’s Thoughts On Who Should Play The Next Bond

Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently Daniel Craig. These are some of the names that have played the legendary MI6 agent James Bond since the 1962 film Dr. No. With Craig’s time reaching its end as the agent, many have begun to debate on who should take over the role of this iconic character (though Craig will be returning for one more film).

Looking back, we know that the character has always been played by a white male lead, the name that has come up many times to take over is the British actor Idris Elba. This suggestion stirred some controversy when Anthony Horowitz, who has written continuations to Bond novels, commented that Elba would be “too rough to play the part” and that “he is a bit too ‘street’ for Bond”. He later apologized for his remarks saying that he had used a poor choice of words.

But what does Elba think about who should take on the iconic role next? Recently he made these comments to Variety via a Facebook interview:

“There is no such thing as a ‘Black Bond,’ It’s just about are we interested in seeing a Bond other than being male? It could be a woman. It could be a black woman. It could be a white woman. I think that character? Everybody would like to see them do something different with it. Why not?”

Looks like Elba is on board for a drastic change with the character, particularly seeing a woman take on the role. We know that these comments will no doubt spark a debate on whether gender and ethnicity are essential to the character of James Bond. It seems like Elba is saying is that the white male lead has been done enough to where audiences would want to see something different.

Luckily for all of us, there is still a lot of time to debate this as we still do not have word on what is happening with Bond 25. The one thing we do know is that Daniel Craig will be playing the agent one last time. With all the Bond movies we have had good and bad, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to change it up, even if it is just for one or two films. If, in fact, they were to cast a woman to play the MI6 agent, who would be your first pick? Let us know in the comment section below!
