Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently Daniel Craig. These are some of the names that have played the legendary MI6 agent James Bond since the 1962 film Dr. No. With Craig’s time reaching its end as the agent, many have begun to debate on who should take over the role of this iconic character (though Craig will be returning for one more film).

Looking back, we know that the character has always been played by a white male lead, the name that has come up many times to take over is the British actor Idris Elba. This suggestion stirred some controversy when Anthony Horowitz, who has written continuations to Bond novels, commented that Elba would be “too rough to play the part” and that “he is a bit too ‘street’ for Bond”. He later apologized for his remarks saying that he had used a poor choice of words.

But what does Elba think about who should take on the iconic role next? Recently he made these comments to Variety via a Facebook interview:

“There is no such thing as a ‘Black Bond,’ It’s just about are we interested in seeing a Bond other than being male? It could be a woman. It could be a black woman. It could be a white woman. I think that character? Everybody would like to see them do something different with it. Why not?”

Looks like Elba is on board for a drastic change with the character, particularly seeing a woman take on the role. We know that these comments will no doubt spark a debate on whether gender and ethnicity are essential to the character of James Bond. It seems like Elba is saying is that the white male lead has been done enough to where audiences would want to see something different.

Luckily for all of us, there is still a lot of time to debate this as we still do not have word on what is happening with Bond 25. The one thing we do know is that Daniel Craig will be playing the agent one last time. With all the Bond movies we have had good and bad, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to change it up, even if it is just for one or two films. If, in fact, they were to cast a woman to play the MI6 agent, who would be your first pick? Let us know in the comment section below!

Going from white man to black man still keeps the overall theme of Bond; I personally wouldn’t hate to see a non-white man take up the role.

However, changing it to a woman completely changes who “Bond” is. With Red Sparrow, Atomic Blonde, Salt, Black Widow (to come) you have a version of a female James Bond type character; better to give actresses their own original movie character than just make a Jane Bond movie.

What about spin-offs? Not sure, if something like this would work, but I would like to see them trying.

Pass the title of 007 onto a new person. I think it’s more insulting to change an existing character. It’s like telling minorities they’re not good enough to carry an original character. If Bond dies or retires then his legacy could be passed onto a new 007. An original character created for a new generation.

lets recast Martin Luther King Jr as a trans white woman too while we are at it

I don’t think James Bond needs to change gender OR race…
Just continue to have the best stories with the best villains.

I liked when the media was flirting with the idea of Tom Hiddleson
as Bond. I’d like to see Michael Shannon as a ‘Dr. No’-esque villain.

” Bond is Dead… we need a new Double O to fill his spot… who do we have?”

a few people of different gender and races perform missions but only 1 gets the 2 kills necessary for the job…

“Congratulations… You’ve been appointed Double O status… specifically… Double O Seven… here’s your Gun and the keys to your new car… and please bring the car back in one piece… the last Double O 7 was rather reckless…. please speak your name in the receiver for verification… :”

Camera Pans from the Gun on the Table… to see a person walking up to the table picking up the gun…
next shot is from the back of a person picking up the gun wearing a black trench coat… you see M… and Q standing in front but not the person…..

the next shot is a close up on the lips… you see them grin and open as if they were just about to utter their name then… QUEUE MUSIC…

    movie should be titled ‘007’

They’ve made the exact same film about 25 times now. They’re stuck. If they change anything it’s #notmybond and if they don’t it’s the same old thing.

No, Bond was designed to be a white, British male, how do we know? Because he’s described as such by Ian Fleming. It might not be a popular opinion in this social-justice charged 2010s but I don’t care. Don’t change Bond from a white male lead…Same as I don’t want Black Panther to become White Panther, same as I wouldn’t want Wonder Woman to become Wonder Man. Authenticity to the original character design, please.
