Looks like you can’t keep Ian Somerhalder away from the vampire drama genre. Most people would recognize Somerhalder for his role as Damon Salvatore on The CW’s series The Vampire Diaries, which wrapped up last year after 8 seasons. During the last two seasons Somerhalder also served as a director.
Fast forward a year later and according to reports from Deadline, Somerhalder is attached to star and direct in an hour long drama titled V-Wars. This series is based on Jonathan Manberry’s bestselling title from IDW Entertainment and High Park Entertainment. The series has been given a 10 episode order by Netflix, which had been developed as a straight to series project in 2014.
Somerhalder will be portraying a character named Dr. Luther Swann. He steps into a world of horrors when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend named Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on humans. Unfortunately this disease spreads causing a division between normal people and these vampires. While Swann tries to understand what is happening, his friend Fayne rises to become the powerful leader of the vampires.
President of IDW Entertainment said this of the announcement, “We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season.”
At the moment Somerhalder and his wife Nikki Reed have a pod deal with Warner Bros. TV to produce new content for the network under their production company Rare Birds Productions.
