Hollywood always enjoys its passing of the torch moments. So much so that we expect, as the stars of their big franchises age, that the character will pass said torch onto a new generation of heroes. While Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t exactly inspire confidence, one good thing they did was keep the fedora squarely on Indy’s head. The eternal question, however, is whether or not we’ll actually get that fifth movie.

“We’re working away getting the script where we want it to be and we’ll be ready to go,” Kathleen Kennedy told BBC News after accepting the BAFTA Fellowship award. And when asked if it would be a reboot, she said, “Oh, Harrison Ford will be involved. It’s not a reboot, it’s a continuation. [Harrison Ford] can’t wait. He absolutely is [involved].”

Of course, that’s not to say a passing of the torch isn’t an inevitability. With Ford aging, if they want to keep this franchise going, they will want to do something sooner rather than later. So, while this is a continuation, who knows what will actually lie within the runtime of the story.

Either way, it sounds like Lucasfilm has Indiana Jones 5 on the brain. Last time we checked, the film was set for a July 9, 2021 release, so they could still easily make that date. But will they? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was pushed yet again, but so long as they keep the momentum of development, it hopefully won’t be more than a few years from release.
