Introduction To The Cast of Netflix’s Selena: The Series

Selena Quintanilla was a big figure in Latin pop culture and a big part of Tejano music. Unfortunately her blossoming career was cut short when her former manager Yolanda Saldivar shot and killed her in March of 1995. In 1997 Warner Bros. Pictures released Selena directed by Gregory Nava, a film that followed her life and career. Jennifer Lopez starred as Selena, Edward James Olmos starred as her father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Constance Marie played her mother Marcella Quintanilla.

Today Netflix announced the cast for their upcoming drama series Selena: The Series. “Part 1” will feature six one hour episodes on their streaming service. Executive producers for the series are Jaime Davila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Simran A. Singh and Moises Zamora. It’s being produced by Campanario Entertainment.

“Selena is an inspirational figure who’s transcended generations. At Campanario, we’ve always known it was crucial for this series to find actors with the right mix of talent, charisma, and passion to honor Selena’s legacy and the story of her family,” said Jaime Davila, president and co-founder of Campanario Entertainment. “Our casting director Carla Hool and her team have found an amazing cast to depict the Quintanilla family, and we’re sure fans everywhere will be captivated yet again by Selena’s incredible life.”

As for the cast of Selena: The Series, it’s lead by Christian Serratos, who has been featured in The Walking Dead and Twilight, she will take on the iconic Latin singer Selena Quintanilla that is described as, “an incredibly talented and charming young woman from South Texas, who chases her musical aspirations with her family and becomes one of the most successful Latin artists of all time.” If you want a little sneak peak at what she will look like in the role, you can check out Netflix’s introduction of Serratos as Selena above! We can see her wearing that purple outfit and her red lipstick that she was known well for as well as singing one of her most popular songs, Como La Flor.

She is joined by Gabriel Chavarria, who will play Selena’s oldest brother and the bands music producer A.B. Quintanilla. Ricardo Chavira will take on the role of Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father that always pushed his kids to work hard and dream big. Dark Web‘s Noemi Gonzalez will play Suzette Quintanilla who is Selena’s sister and best friend. She becomes the first female drummer in Tejano music history. Saidy Lopez will play Selena’s mother Marcella Quintanilla that is the cohesive, nurturing force in the family. Wrapping up the cast is Madison Taylor Baez that will take on the role of a young Selena.

It would seem like this will probably be a two part series with a total of 12 one hour episodes. I am curious about what part of her life they are going to be focusing on because they have a lot of time to fill. I thought that the 1997 film did a great job at telling her story.

Netflix’s Selena: The Series will debut on their streaming service sometime 2020.
