Is Ashoka really just Rebels Season 5? Dave Filoni says, kinda, but explains how the story has also evolved since he made that show. Speaking with EW recently, Filoni was asked if Ahsoka is basically just Rebels Season 5 in live-action? Here is the Star Wars creative’s response.
“That’s an interesting question,” Filoni replied. “I suppose that’s one way of looking at it, because of the epilogue that I did in Rebels. Definitely all signs are indicating that there’s a continuation.”
“For me, when I’m telling those stories, I don’t limit things like, ‘Oh, well, I did it an animation, so I would do it distinctly different in live action.’ There’s just the story that it is, and I was telling it in one medium.”
Filoni then went on to indicate that had told this story then, before The Mandalorian, things would be different.
“Rebels is a different style than Clone Wars. Even visually, that changed the way I could execute certain things in Rebels. The story kind of evolved since I worked on Rebels. Working with [Jon Favreau] and setting things down in The Mandalorian created an opportunity to see: How does Ahsoka work as a character in live action?”
Filoni then goes on to describe the process of finding the right actor for Ahsoka and ending up at Rosario Dawson. That’s a story we’ve heard before, but check the link above if you want to read everything Filoni had to say to EW.

As an enjoyer of Rebels, (not Season 1) I am looking forward to seeing the old Ghost crew in live-action. I’ve said before that one difference we should expect in Ahsoka is the focus to be squarely on Ahsoka herself. In Rebels Ahsoka was not the lead character like she was in The Clone Wars. Instead Ahsoka played more of an Obi-Wan role to Ezra’s lead. That will change in a show that likely begins and ends with Ahsoka as the lead.
For now we have a fair idea of where the story is going based on the trailers alone. Ahsoka and Sabine are looking for Thrawn as a means to finding Ezra and bringing him home. However there are others looking for Thrawn, and he has Force users backing him up this time.
So, is Ahsoka really just Rebels Season 5? I think the answer is likely, yes, however the story has changed for Filoni since he made that show years ago. What do you think of Dave Filoni’s comments? As always, leave any thoughts below.
