This is a surprise to me, but a new report from indicates the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie will film next year. The latest official update from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was that Taika was working away on his movie on his own, and they were giving him that time.
However, in an article from Deadline about Taika’s next movie they…. Actually, here is that information direct from the trade.
Taika Waititi looks to have found his next project to direct: Sources tell Deadline that the Jojo Rabbit Oscar winner is in negotiations to direct Klara and the Sun, based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s New York Times bestselling novel, for Sony’s 3000 Pictures. The project is in development, with Dahvi Waller penning the original draft of the screenplay.
However, what interested me more was this line below. I’m sure the LRM readership will be more interested in this line also.
As for Star Wars, insiders say he is still excited about the project and committed to direct that next year.
I think it would be fair to say that everyone in this industry predicted that the first Star Wars movie to get made would be the Rey sequel directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. I absolutely still believe that will be the case because we know the casting process is beginning to ramp up. I’m therefore really surprised to hear that Taika thinks he will be shooting his Star Wars movie next year. If that was instead 2 years off, I would be far less surprised. However, here we are, and Deadline certainly has the sources who could provide this information.

Even if true though it does not mean Taika’s Star Wars movie will film next year, it may just be Taika’s hope. If it does, it could be a December start for all we know which is still over a year and a half away. Therefore, given Lucasfilm’s record recently, I’m just glad to hear the movie still seems to be happening, from Waititi’s camp at least. I’m a Taika fan, but I have a feeling his Star Wars won’t be for everyone, we shall see I guess?
So, a new report from Deadline indicates the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie will film next year. Will that happen 100%? Who knows, but I guess it is positive news for now anyway. As always, share any thoughts you have about this news below.
