Some interesting Barside Buzz indicates that Anya Taylor-Joy may have been cast in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Now, if we go back before the official cast was announced, Taylor-Joy was rumored to play the lead female role. However, the cast was recently announced (see related section below) and there was no mention of the actress.

Now we have Daniel RPK on his Patreon saying he’s hearing Taylor-Joy has been cast as the female lead, a character simply called Seren.

I’ll admit I’m dubious on this one and I will explain my reasoning.

First of all Seren is not a Tolkien character, which would indicate a codename or a newly invented character. If that were the case, why not announce Anya Taylor-Joy alongside the rest of the main cast? What would be the benefit in keeping her casting a surprise? There are some fans theorising she is a recast Arwen to play off the recast Aragorn in Jamie Dornan. Well, why keep that hidden? Why not just announce it like everyone else. This is not a Marvel movie where stunt casting causes gasps, its Lord of the Rings.

That leaves us with two possibilities as I see it. Either the rumor is not accurate any longer, or the casting deal was simply not yet completed as the time of the casting announcement. Which remains to be seen, but I really would be keen to rule out the secret piece of casting being held back angle here. It just makes no sense based on the rest of the reveal strategy.

I would also have thought the female lead of the movie was Kate Winslet. We don’t know who Winslet is playing. However, I have theorised previously that I believe she will play Smeagol’s grandmother as part of his backstory.

I guess we will find out, if Anya Taylor-Joy has joined the cast then I’m sure one of the trades will have the story soon. If we hear nothing, the longer it goes the less likely this rumor is legit.
