Main Cast For The Hunt Of Gollum Revealed Including Aragorn Recast And Returning Faces

The main cast has been revealed for the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum for WB, including a recast Aragorn and some returning faces. The announcement was made for the new The Lord of the Rings movie’s cast last night at CinemaCon.

Here is what THR reports,

‘After months of breathless speculation, Warner Bros. and New Line have revealed the cast for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The announcement was tied to the Warners’ CinemaCon presentation Tuesday evening.

Among the new additions to the cast are Jamie Dornan, who will play Strider, the chief of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers and also known to fans as Aragorn. He steps into the shoes of Viggo Mortensen from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Leo Woodall will play Halvard, another of the Dúnedain, who is joining Strider on the dangerous hunt.

Lee Pace is also back as Thranduil after playing the elf in the Hobbit trilogy.

Kate Winslet is on board as a new addition to the franchise, with Ian McKellen set to return as Gandalf. Elijah Wood is also back as Frodo for the film, which is set for a theatrical release on Dec. 17, 2027.’

Of course, not mentioned in the quote is Serkis himself who will once again play Gollum.

FYI, the name tributed to Winslet’s character is ‘Marigol’. Now, there is no Marigol named anywhere in the books by Tolkien. The closest would be Marigold, who is the sister of Sam Gamgee and barely gets a mention. It would suggest then this is a created role for the film only. One has to assume it’s a fairly large role with a name as big as Winslet attached. So with that being said…

My guess, for a while now, is that Winslet will play the grandmother of Smeagol in his early life, said to be explored in the film. Never named in the books, all we know is that Smeagol’s grandmother was the matriarch of their community and chiefly responsible for his banishment (due to his own actions) post-acquiring the One.

However, I could be wrong and it’s someone brand new. I have a feeling I might be right on this one though.

This also shows that recent rumors around Leo Woodall were kinda right and wrong. He was cast in the film playing a Ranger, but the rumors thought it was for the role of Aragorn. A role that we now know is played by Jamie Dornan. Lee Pace coming back as Thranduil just makes so much sense I can’t believe I didn’t think of it myself. It’s Thranduil’s Kingdom that Aragorn takes Gollum to to be questioned by the Elves. As for Elijah Wood… who knows? Narrator, brief cameo of what is currently happening in the shire with him?

What do you think of this main cast for The Hunt for Gollum, including Jamie Dornan as the recast Aragorn? Thoughts below.
