Daredevil fans are starting to get excited as a new casting call could be hinting at Echo coming to the MCU. The character of Echo (Maya Lopez) first appeared alongside Daredevil, and was a former love interest of Matt Murdock. Echo is a deaf Native American with super powers (obviously for Marvel). In the comics, Echo’s parents were killed by Kingpin who then raised her. Though, after discovering her lover Matt Murdock was really Daredevil, Echo turned against Kingpin, and even ended up an Avenger.
The scoop comes by way of Murphy’s Multiverse who caught hold of a casting call for a Disney+ show. Here is what was on the outlet’s report.
Sarah Finn put out the call for a deaf female, Native American, First Nations, Indigenous or Latinx, 18 or older, to play the role of “Malia” in an upcoming Disney Plus series set to shoot this Fall. Finn is looking for someone “independent, athletic and bright” to play a 20 something character.
The outlet does go on to warn that Sarah Finn might be Marvel’s casting director, but she has also worked on Star Wars including The Mandalorian. There is nothing obvious that connects the casting call to the MCU. However, the description is very specific, especially wanting a deaf actress to play the part of a deaf character. I think having a deaf actress playing a deaf role is perfect, but it seems strange for Star Wars doesn’t it? You can probably see from my Echo description above why the outlet theorizes this could be Maya Lopez.

This report from Murphy has sent some Daredevil fans into a frenzy. We all know that Daredevil was canceled on Netflix, but in around a year’s time, Disney can use the character again. So fans are putting this rumor up as evidence that Marvel are listening to the #saveDaredevil movement. Whilst you are free to make that connection, it’s not really there, yet.
The MCU has regularly used characters from properties that were not associated with them in the comics. As I mentioned above, Echo was a one-time Avenger, so it is absolutely possible for Echo to show up without requiring Daredevil. Hey, I want Daredevil back as much as the next fan, I loved all three seasons of that show. I’m just not going to get my hopes up on as small a detail as a potential Echo casting. There has been almost no rumors or hints that Daredevil is coming back, yet. Though I do still hope to see that trend reversed.
