Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director Working On ‘Another Installment’? No, That’s Not What He Said

According to the latest report by Deadline, the Ghostbuster: Afterlife sequel casts both Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife director working on another installment? No. Calm down. Hear us out.

It’s almost a given that any big film has another one in the works. No one is really asking whether or not Marvel Studios is making more movies, and even among smaller franchises, sequels seem almost guaranteed. Yes, some film series are dormant, but when we have a film deep into post-production, you know the studio is thinking ahead. If that film does well, they’ll want to have a sequel ready and waiting to jump into production.

So, is this the case for Ghostbusters: Afterlife? The film was set to hit this year, but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been pushed to next year. This has given director Jason Reitman more time to look back.

“We have a lot of time now. I’ve been spending my days editing Ghostbusters, so that’s where I’ve been.”

But before that, he said something that other outlets have been reporting as work on a sequel. Based on the context, there’s no way that’s it. On Josh Gad’s YouTube series Reunited Apart, he brought the cast together, along with Reitman. After some reminiscing among the cast, Gad turned to Reitman, asking about “another installment.”

“I can’t tell you anything, but we are working on another installment. We have a little bit more time, and look, as a director, I’ve never had this opportunity to actually take a pause and breathe and look at the movie again.”

Clearly, based on context, we know the film in question is Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Reitman has been hard at work on that film for some time, and it was clear the next “installment” was this movie and not any nebulous sequel. Based on the comments, this COVID-19 period did seem to give Reitman an opportunity to fine-tune the project.

That being said, I’d be surprised if a Ghosbusters: Afterlife sequel wasn’t in the works. Sony has been desperate for a new franchise for some time, and they’ve been trying to push out another Ghostbusters constantly. So, if this does well, you can bet your ass they’d jump on a sequel. But don’t consider this comment any confirmation of the sort.
