Is Netflix Removing Originals?

Netflix’s grip on a lot of properties has loosened within the last few years as each studio is trying to capitalize on people using streaming services more and more instead of cable television, sometimes it’s just easier to binge watch. One perfect example is Friends, which Netflix held as long as they could before they were taken back by Warner Bros. to include in their streaming service HBO Max, which launches this year. Also sometimes contracts just end and properties leave the streaming service, something that we see month to month.

But some Netflix users have noticed that some series on the streaming service labeled “originals” are also beginning to disappear. For example the BBC series Happy Valley, which is labeled as a Netflix exclusive, is leaving the service in March. River, which was also made with a BBC partnership series is also leaving Netflix. SO the question is, why would an original series leave it’s own service?

The reason is that Netflix uses the label “original” loosely as it has multiple meanings. There are some series like The Witcher and Stranger Things that are true Netflix original creations, meaning that Netflix green lit them and is the first and usually the only place to air them. Then there are other series like the popular Peaky Blinders and Bodyguard, which are actually produced by BBC in the UK and then released in other countries by Netflix, which in theory makes them “original”.

So why are these series being pulled? There actually isn’t really a clear answer, it could just be something as simple as an expiring deal between BBC and Netflix. But it is interesting to note that BBC has also started to make other significant deals for their content. For example, they struck a deal with Discovery to exclusively stream Planet Earth titles on it’s own service. Also it could be just the fact that both Happy Valley and River don’t attract many viewers and they aren’t worried about losing them.

So overall what we have learned here is that the label “original” is does not mean that a show is safe from being pulled because it’s not really an original. But even if shows are being pulled we know that Netflix will usually throw money at the studios to keep them as long as possible. So unless a studio really wants their property back, it will probably stay on Netflix.
