Is Resident Evil: Resistance Canon In The Resident Evil Universe?

With January almost over that means that we are that much closer to the April release of Capcom’s Resident Evil 3, the re-make of their 1999 classic video game, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which also happens to be my favorite in the franchise. Paired with this game is also the asymmetrical multiplayer spin-off titled Resident Evil: Resistance. This game features a one versus four online survivor horror experience that is set in the same world. Players will have the option to play as the cunning Mastermind or to join the group of survivors who are desperately trying to escape the obstacles of the Mastermind.

According to Capcom Resident Evil: Resistance is not a canonical new story in the Resident Evil universe but a “a fun online experience with connections to the Resident Evil Universe”. During an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine via GamesRadar, Resident Evil 3 producer Peter Fabiano clarified this point about the game saying that, “basically set in Raccoon City with scenarios that make it impossible to fit in the actual timeline, even while players can expect to see familiar enemies and characters like Mastermind.”

He goes on to explain that the connection to Resident Evil 3 is purely thematic and goes on to explain why the decision was made to pair the two games as a package instead of releasing them separately. “You’ll remember that the Japanese subtitle for RE3 was Last Escape,” Fabiano tells OPM. “Both of these titles have characters that are trying to escape somewhere or something, so thematically it made sense. We also wanted to take up the challenge of building out an online game set in the RE universe.”

Looking at this title it looks like it would be something entertaining to play with friends for a while, taking turns plotting against your first or coming together and trying to outwit the mastermind. But I am curious to see what kind of downloadable content they will have for this to keep people coming back. Are you looking forward to playing Resident Evil: Resistance?
