IT: Chapter Two – Bill Skarsgard Had Pennywise Nightmares

While many of us don’t necessarily think of acting as an inherently taxing job when compared to the more blue-collar occupations out there, there is no doubt that it can be an emotionally detrimental profession. The number of actors out there who have succumbed to various ailments as a result of their work are innumerable, as the job sometimes takes them to dark and disturbing places.

One of the quintessential movie monsters out there these days is Pennywise the Clown. He was, of course, played by Tim Curry in the original 1990s miniseries IT, but he was more recently portrayed on the big screen by actor Bill Skarsgard, who is returning to the character in this year’s IT: Chapter Two. But did playing such a disturbing creature have an effect on him? The short answer is yes.

“I was home, done with the movie, and I started having very strange and vivid Pennywise dreams. Every night, he came and visited. It was in the shape of either me dealing with him, sort of Pennywise as a separate entity of me, and then also me as Pennywise in circumstances that I didn’t appreciate. Like, I’m Pennywise and I’m really upset that I’m out in public and people are looking at me.”

So, interestingly enough, this wasn’t really a case of him simply being terrorized by the creature, but about him being terrorized AS the creature, which is a unique little twist on the whole thing. That being said, it doesn’t seem to genuinely scare the actor.

“This was a process of letting go of the monster. It was amazing. It’s a daunting but exciting thing to sort of revisit him again. I’m good with it.”

Such are some of the occupational hazards with playing a horror character, I guess. But what do you think of all this? Let us know your thoughts down below!
