Going into the first IT movie, there were virtually no expectations. I mean, sure there were some hopes and dreams from fans of the Stephen King novel, but if you’d kept your eye on the comments around the web, there weren’t really expectations per se. Stephen King novels have had their fair share of bad adaptations, and given the size and scope of IT, many fans weren’t holding their breath.
And then the movie came out. Holy crap, this thing impressed on virtually every front imaginable. Not only did they absolutely nail the dynamic between the kids making up the young ensemble cast, but they managed to make Pennywise genuinely threatening and scary in a completely different way than we’ve seen in the past.

You can imagine the pressure the lobs onto the filmmakers. One of the screenwriters, Gary Dauberman, spoke with THR while promoting Annabelle Comes Home, and in their conversations, they discuss the pressure of going into the next film after the success of the original.
“There’s always pressure, of course, but we all kinda kept our heads down and proceeded with the plan. There was never a moment where we said, ‘We really gotta outdo ourselves this time.’ Stephen King and the novel did a lot of the heavy lifting for us. I can’t speak for anyone else involved, but I stuck with the plan we had because it seemed to work the first time. If it ain’t broke…”
This is comforting to hear. Sometimes, it’s easy for filmmakers to get self-conscious while searching for “what worked” in the previous film, and in attempts to capitalize on it, miss the mark completely. Rather than trying to do that, it sounds like they’re being smart in just keeping true to the excellent source material.
