Alfred, Thomas Wayne Cast In Upcoming Pennyworth Series, Production Begins Next Week

UPDATE: Thomas Wayne also cast.

It’s still hard to think about an upcoming series following Alfred Pennyworth without it feeling like a punchline to a joke (Well, actually, it WAS a punchline to a joke earlier this year in Teen Titans, so it makes sense), but it looks like WBTV and EPIX are moving forward with the series Pennyworth, as production is officially beginning next week.

The folks over at the two studios have announced their intentions to begin shooting the 10-episode one-hour drama series on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Warner Bros. studios Leavesden in the UK. Here is the short description they’ve offered us.

“It follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne, who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.”

But that’s not all. They’ve also cast the titular Pennyworth in the form of Jack Bannon (pictured at the top). The name isn’t one I’m too familiar with, but he has starred in such films as Fury and The Imitation Game — both of which I’ve seen, but neither of which I remember seeing Bannon in. Here is the description given about the character of Alfred himself.

“Alfred Pennyworth is a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.”

Admittedly, this sounds like it could be interesting, no matter how cynical I feel. Should they allow the show to be as dark as it needs to be interesting, it may end up being a great story outside of it just being another comic book adaptation — but we’ll have to wait and see.

Also cast is Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, future father of Bruce Wayne. Here’s how the studio describes the character.

“Thomas Wayne is a young, fresh-faced billionaire hailing from the east coast of the United States. Confident and extremely disciplined, this young aristocrat meets an unlikely business partner in Alfred Pennyworth.”

Pennyworth comes from Gotham executive producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon.
