The Walking Dead Season Nine Recap: The Bridge

Rick Grimes walks into a room, pulls up a chair and has a seat. He is looking directly at the viewer as if the audience is who he is facing.  The shot is a close-up of Rick’s face as he talks to the camera, updating his guest of the current state of the union between the communities. This is where the episode takes off on its story as we are experiencing the next chapter in season nine of The Walking Dead.

Maggie is still sticking to her guns regarding any assistance being sent to the Sanctuary, especially after her death sentence for Gregory. Michonne is attempting to chip away at Maggie’s strong stance against the Sanctuary and current forms of punishment, going so far as to seek the help of Jesus. Their chats lead to Maggie deciding to hear out Earl, the prisoner who allowed himself to be turned by Gregory and attempted to assassinate Maggie. From here, Maggie decides to ease up on her delivery of supplies to Sanctuary, but not without making things clear about her leadership of Hilltop.

Daryl has issues with Justin, a Savior who doesn’t take well to orders from the Survivors. When Justin “mistakenly” doesn’t set off a second alarm in the movement of a walker heard, the result is an attack on bridge workers and what leads to a life-altering moment for Aaron. This mistake is the last straw for Rick who tells Justin to pack up and leave. Rick’s decision came after Daryl decided to vent his frustration by beating the hell out of Justin.

Even with the conflicts throughout the communities, others are finding ways to connect. Carol and King Ezekiel continue their courtship, with Ezekiel swearing he will not quit fighting for them. Meanwhile, Anne and Father Gabriel feel a spark and decide to go with it. Rick sees this all as a positive step forward in the growth of the united communities. With that, we return to the room where Rick is seated, updating whoever he’s talking to on the day’s events. On the other side, we see that Rick has been talking to Negan. Negan counters Rick by saying the bridge he’s building is simply a monument to the dead, not the future. He then leaves Rick with these lines, with the angle focusing right on Negan’s eyes:

“You’re not saving the world, Rick. You’re just getting it ready for me.”

In the final moments of the episode, Anne spots flashing lights flying high in the night sky, and Justin is attacked by an unknown figure on his way from the camp. An unknown figure he seems to recognize before it quickly takes him out.
