While speaking with The San Francisco Chronicle and promoting his new film, Foreigner, Jackie Chan gave an update on a sequel to the 2010 remake of the 80s classic The Karate Kid. Chan said that the initial script simply wasn’t very good and the current script being worked on it much better.

However, having been seven years since the first film, Jaden Smith has really grown up, and Chan says he is really tall.

This is a somewhat common problem for filmmakers (and one that the Duffer brothers will soon have to deal with on Stranger Things). Child actors sometimes hit growth spurts that majorly conflict with the character they are portraying in a film (think of Walt from the TV show LOST). For this film, the issue can probably be worked around fairly easily, as they would just have to set it in more or less real time:

“He’s not a kid anymore. You cannot [call it] The Karate Man. I don’t know.”

For me, nothing will ever match the magic of the original 1984 film. That’s not to say I think the Chan/Smith remake was an awful film, it just didn’t have the Morita/Macchio magic.

No one will cast Jaden Smith anymore, is box office is incredibly negative, he’s a freak, he’s a spoiled brat, and the karate kid is an interesting without a kid. So they’ll just find Jackie Chan the next karate kid, problem solved

Jackie Chan should train Ralph Machio….that would be amazing. It’s basically 2 hours of getting an out-of-shape, fat and old actor back into shape.

Meanwhile William Zabka is working with disaster relief and being an overall good guy. But for some reason Ralph wants to fight him in public.
I actually read somewhere (here?) that the two of them wanted to do a sequel. Not sure what happened with that.

I believe they are doing like a 10 episode YoutubeRed series together.

It should’ve been called The Kung Fu Kid.

How can this sequel be real if his talent ain’t real?

Couldn’t tbey just shrink Jaden like they did with the Hobbits in LOTR? Come on guys, think of something to make this happen! What the world needs right now is more Jaden Smith.
