James Gunn Clarifies The Fate Of High Evolutionary In Guardians 3 [SPOILERS]

James Gunn clarifies the fate of High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Major SPOILERS here for the film so be warned.

After some comments of alternate endings by Chukwudi Iwuji, eagle eyed fans and speculation, James Gunn clarifies the fate of High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It goes without saying there will be major SPOILERS here for the film so be warned.

Most fans probably came out of Guardians 3 thinking High Evolutionary dead. We know Rocket refused to kill him, but we didn’t actually see him get rescued either. Or did we? Some eagle eyed fans have pointed out that Drax can be seen carrying an unconscious HE in the escape scene with all the animals. Some fans felt this could have been due to a change to the ending. However director James Gunn has clarified some details.

Yes, that is HE that Drax is carrying. Yes, he is alive and a prisoner on Knowhere and the scene mentioned by Iwuji was cut for pacing reasons. Plus Gunn talks about why this decision to save HE is important to Rocket’s character arc. Check it out.

As you can see, Gunn explains why a scene showing HE’s survival clearly was cut.

“Yes! It’s the whole culmination of Rocket’s journey. His shift comes in that he doesn’t kill him – he goes from being the least empathetic to the most empathetic Guardian. It seems silly & hollow that he’d refuse to kill him & then leave him on an exploding ship. And, yes, there is a deleted scene. It’s really great actually but it messed up the pacing of the end. But you’ll see it in the extras eventually.”

So as far as Gunn is concerned, and officially now in the MCU, High Evolutionary survived and is currently a prisoner on Knowhere.

I’m conflicted about this one for a couple reasons. I have no issues with Rocket’s change of approach, however I’d maybe have rather seen HE refuse rescue. I’m unsure that a villain as downright nasty as HE can be redeemed in any meaningful way. Therefore, keeping I’m alive doesn’t seem to be for him to come back in the future. I guess we could never hear from HE again and as far as we know he spent his days refusing to be rehabilitated stuck in prison and still being treated better than he treated any of his ‘creations’.

I guess that’s what I’m saying, the Guardians saving High Evo is fine. However, I also kinda don’t want to see him back as it’ll never be as powerful as it was in this movie. That of course would no longer be James Gunn’s call as it is unlikely he will make any more Marvel movies given he runs another studio now.
