DC co-boss James Gunn confirms there will be theatrical animated movies in the DCU. The information comes after it was recently announced that two new DC based animated movies were in development. Those movies, as also confirmed by Gunn are not DCU when he replied to a question on Threads, the new social media platform. However, Gunn also confirmed in the same post that there will be theatrical DCU movies in the future.
We’ve known for some time that the ambitious plan for the DCU is to have a shared universe across all mediums. Namely live-action movies and TV, plus animated movies and TV series and video games. The ambitious part of that idea is to have the actors signed up to do voice work for animated and video games if hired for live-action appearances. Ergo, David Corenswet should/would play Superman in all aspects of the DCU.
I guess what we were not sure of was whether any of the animated movies would be designed for theatres, or straight releases on Max? Well, now we know the answer.

I do like the idea of being able to have an interconnected universe across all mediums. In some ways this is more like Star Wars than the MCU. However that also presents certain challenges to maintaining canon which the DCU will have to deal with. That’s also true of the MCU, other than we don’t really have any canon animated shows or video games.
It’s I think the right call, and it’snot an easy job to pull off. However, I believe that Safran and Gunn could be the ones to transform the DCU into a money maker, finally.
What do you think as James Gunn confirms there will be theatrical animated movies in the DCU? Do you like this cross medium approach to the DCU, or would you prefer it is 95% live-action like the MCU? As always, let us know in the usual spot below.
