James Gunn On Guardians 3 Shoot And Doing What He Wants

James Gunn on Guardians 3

Although in the midst of promoting the soon to be released The Suicide Squad for WB, Collider talks to James Gunn on Guardians 3, the title, when it shoots and a bit more. First off, the title for the movie will indeed be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it will begin filming this November in Georgia.

In terms of the script, Gunn reiterates it’s been done for years. However Gunn also admits to still be tinkering with it.

“It’s basically been finished for years. I keep fiddling with different things and adding things, and figuring out permutations and stuff — I’m in the middle of doing another draft now — but it’s really small stuff in comparison to what it has been. It’s basically been finished since three years ago.”

You do wonder, considering how much has changed in the MCU since Guardians 2 whether Gunn’s script would need to be reworked. After all, Gunn now has to deal with a Gamora situation he did not plan for. However, we also must remember that Gunn was consulted on the Gamora death whilst Infinity War was being written. In other words, even some of his early drafts her would have known the Gamora situation. Gunn points out other than Thanos in GOTG, he’s never been asked to add things into the movies for connectivity.

“The only time they ever [asked me to include something for future MCU movies] was on the first movie with Thanos, putting Thanos in there. Which they wanted me to do. But besides that they’ve never done that. I have to pay attention to things that happen, which they did talk to me about – the stuff with Gamora and things like that. I know that the characters have been through certain things, so I have to deal with that stuff. But for the most part, they never once asked me to put anything in the script for Volume 3 to set up anything in the future. Nor would I do it, frankly, it’s not really my thing.”

Hmm, so Gunn do it now, but he was quite happy on Guardians of the Galaxy to do this? Maybe I’m reading this wrong, and frankly it makes no difference to me anyway. I think Gunn as a filmmaker is in a much more commanding position to do what he wants these days. If The Suicide Squad is a success, which I think it will be, then Gunn gets even more freedom going forward. If he is adamant that Guardians 3 will be made his way, good on him. Gunn is that Guardians team.

After Guardians 3 I could see Gunn going a bit like Nolan and doing his onw thing with a variety of Studios lining up to pay for it. What do you think of James Gunn on Guardians 3? As always, leave any thoughts below.
