At first many people weren’t even sure if they wanted a Suicide Squad sequel, but once they attached James Gunn to the next film, interest has somewhat peaked again. We have already heard that there will be some major characters getting swapped out, which is fine as there is a decent list of Suicide Squad members. The writer/director took to Instagram to share his favorite comic run of the villainous group:
Alright, Gunn is a fan of the John Ostrander run in which Legends practically revived the team in 1986-1987. The mini-series consisted of the government teaming with the super villains for co-op missions. It initially began with actual human warfare but other series eventually branched out to fighting aliens. Some of Ostander’s other well-known work with Task Force X can be found in Suicide Squad Vol. 1: Trial by Fire which is a collection of Suicide Squad #1-8 and Secret Origins #14.
Could these be Gunn’s inspiration for the sequel? Granted, this was somewhat the premises for the original film, but I would love to see more of a covert mission connected to a type of government agency rather than aliens or whatever it was we got in the original film…
According to Collider, there have been a mix of confirmed and rumored characters such as Amanda Waller Ratcatcher, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Peacemaker. Deadshot looks to be out as well as possibly Harley and The Joker.

Based on Gunn’s post, who do you think will be involved in the next film? What characters will return? Who will die? Is he merely saying he likes Ostrander’s works, or can we expect the film to be inspired from the works? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
