James Gunn Says Superman Reboot Will Not Require Reshoots

With now just under a year till release, James Gunn confirms it's a wrap on Superman filming.

Ever since he was appointed DC Studios co-chair, James Gunn has been transparent about differentiating the brand from Marvel Studios. The latter has been notorious for their tendency to do months of extensive reshoots on their Marvel Cinematic Universe installments. Gunn intends to avoid that process entirely with his upcoming Superman reboot.

While responding to fan questions on a Q&A session on Threads, Gunn revealed that Superman will not undergo further photography after production wrapped in July. He cited his work on The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 as examples of limiting reshoots only to one day:

“Over-prepare. Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with. Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs. Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything. Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together.”

One new piece of DCU casting news to share as it seems Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn's Superman.

Gunn’s response is a clear sign that pre-production will be the top priority for future DC releases. Setting such a standard is a sharp contrast to the disorganized course of direction that the past DC regimes were infamous for. 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was intended to be the launchpad of the DC Extended Universe to rival the MCU with Warner Bros. planning a slate of 11 movies.

The polarizing reception to Batman v Superman led to seven years of creative leadership turnover, subpar productions, and multiple announced projects canceled outright. Gunn previously explained how DC Studios would operate differently from the past DC regime and Marvel Studios:

“We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished. This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what.”

The new DC Studios under Gunn and Peter Safran will be a combination of live-action and animated projects for theaters and television. Set for release worldwide on July 11, 2025, Superman, along with the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos, will be the first entries of DC’s Chapter One: “Gods and Monsters” slate.
