James Gunn Says The Authority Won’t Happen Anytime Soon But Booster Gold And Paradise Lost Continue Development

James Gunn says The Authority won’t be happening anytime soon, but he is more positive about continuing development on Booster Gold and Paradise Lost. The DC Studios co-boss was on Threads recently and answered some questions fans had about this DCU movie. The Authority was one of the first DCU projects announced, but seems stuck in development hell for now. Here’s what Gunn had to say on Threads when a fan suggested he had slipped up and revealed he was writing The Authority.

“Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

Of course, one character who was supposed to be in The Authority was the Engineer, who has since been in Superman and will return in sequel Man of Tomorrow. Suffice to say whatever the original idea was for this movie was, it would need considerable revision if it is brought up again down the line.

As a film, I’m not sure you can expect The Authority to pack them into the aisles. I wonder if that reality is one of the practical considerations Gunn references? If the script required a massive budget? It’s just not manageable in this climate, with such a fledgling cinematic universe.

However, Gunn was far more positive about two upcoming HBO TV series projects. A fan asked Gunn on this Threads link whether he had any update on Booster Gold or Paradise Lost?

‘BG is in development. PL is in extreme development.’

This makes me laugh. It was not that long ago Gunn called out a rumor that the ‘Wonder Woman’ movie was in fast-tracked development. I remember him asking what that even means and saying development means development. Unless it’s Paradise Lost it seems because that is actually in extreme development. I wonder if that was a knowing little attempt at humor from Gunn there, or not? Decide for yourself reader.

Booster Gold speaks for itself if you know the comic book character. Paradise Lost is supposedly Amazonia based, though we have no idea whether Diana (Wonder Woman) is set to appear. Despite the comment above, a ‘Wonder Woman’ movie is in development and many fans till believe Adria Arjona has been cast in the role to make her debut in Man of Tomorrow. Just remember there’s no actual evidence that is the case, for now. Though, I’ll admit I am firmly on the conspiracy train for this one.

So, The Authority won’t happen anytime soon, if at all and both Booster Gold and Paradise Lost remain in development, or extreme development in the latter’s case. As always, leave any thoughts you have on James Gunn’s comments below.
