Well, this is quite the upset. According to a brand-new report from the folks over at Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer-director James Gunn is set to write and possibly direct Suicide Squad 2.
Of course, this comes months after Gunn was sacked from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for comments he made on Twitter several years back. On the heels of those tweets being discovered, Disney made the quick decision to give him the ax, even though the third Guardians film was set to begin production early next year. As of right now, it sounds like they’ll be using his script, but they have yet to find a director.

This is also an interesting development because, as far as we knew, Suicide Squad 2 already had a director in the form of Gavin O’Connor, the guy behind The Accountant and Warrior. According to the outlet, O’Connor is now set to direct Ben Affleck in the film Torrance.
Given that Gunn has been such a glowing aspect of the already-glowing universe that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that the other side would do their best to seduce him. Is this a good move for James Gunn and Warner Bros.? Not to answer out of turn, but considering Warners made the trailer for the first film resemble a Guardians of the Galaxy film, it seems like a good fit. Let us know your own thoughts down below!
