James Mangold To Start Writing Star Wars Movie In October If Strike Ends | Barside Buzz

Benioff and Weiss detail their cancelled Star Wars trilogy, plus some Barside Buzz that there's still no script for the Rey sequel.

According to the latest Barside Buzz James Mangold is to start writing his Star Wars movie in October. That’s if the WGA strike ends before that. I’m almost certain Mangold will already be thinking about his script and making notes, maybe even actually writing it. However, until the strike ends he cannot submit a draft without breaking the strike.

This rumor comes from Jeff Sneider during this week’s The Hot Mic podcast. Sneider has had a great track record when it comes to Star Wars movies recently, so take that into consideration. Sneider was discussing both of James Mangold’s upcoming projects, which are a Dawn of the Jedi era Star Wars film and Swamp Thing for the DCU. Honestly no one is really sure which of these films will be first up for Mangold. However, Sneider says he’s heard the writer and director is due to start writing his Star Wars movie this October if the strike ends.

Feel free to check the video below, time stamp is around 7 minutes in. Sneider starts talking about what he think is Mangold’s schedule following the Bob Dylan movie he’s is shooting. Apparently the Dylan picture should finish shooting in August. Then, Mangold will be free to start writing the Star Wars movie ‘officially’ this October.

For now all we know about Mangold’s Star Wars movie is the setting. This Star Wars movie will go the farthest back in time within the mythology, right to the very dawn of the Jedi. In fact the era has already been defined by Lucasfilm as the Dawn of the Jedi era. How exactly Mangold will decide to tell that story is a complete mystery for now. We don’t know enough about this period to even speculate upon what the technology levels would be like. This could be anything from the first ever person to discover the Force, to the first hundred years after that event happened. That’s how little we know.

Some fans are worried that if Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny doesn’t do well, this movie may not happen. They’re worried Mangold will suffer the same fate as many an announced writer/director before him at Lucasfilm. However, having already made one movie for Lucasfilm, that internally they are very happy with, and offered him this gig during that shoot, I can’t see that happening. For a start I think Dial of Destiny will do better than some analysts are predicting. The general consensus seems to be it’s better than the last movie (not hard to do). Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still did well at the box office, despite being panned critically. I don’t see why Dial of Destiny won’t?

It could be quite some time before we hear about this movie any further folks. However, we’ll let you know if we hear any more Buzz.

What do you think of the rumor James Mangold is to start writing his Star Wars movie in October if the WGA strike ends? Thoughts below as always.
