James Wan Producing New Van Helsing Film, ‘Overlord’ Helmer Julian Avery Will Direct

According to Deadline famed the vampire vanquisher from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Van Helsing, is set to return to the screen with James Wan producing. Julius Avery (Overlord) is lined up to direct the film as well as rewrite a script from Eric Pearson, who wrote Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow.

It comes as no surprise that plot details are non-existent at this point. However, it’s Van Helsing so we know the basics. Unless Universal really shakes things up, but that is highly doubtful. The character is synonymous with hunting things that go bump in the night. Changing this aspect they may as well just create a new character alltogether. Doing that would be as ridiculous as something like, oh I don’t know, making Luke Skywalker hate the Jedi.

With the success of The Invisible Man, Universal wants to get the rest of their monsters back on the big screen. However, they no longer have plans for the proposed Dark Universe. The focus will now shift to stand-alone films with several monster projects in the works. The Invisible Woman, The Wolfman, and Monster Mash to name a few.

Hugh Jackman was the last to step into the role of Van Helsing back in 2004. And though the studio had plans for a franchise based on the character, the film was not well-received and abandoned any sequels.

I like the character, I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan though. In my opinion, Van Helsing would be better suited for a television series. As I think there is a lot to explore there.
