I think it goes without saying that the character of Harley Quinn is fundamentally connected to that of Joker. While she has more of an independent streak these days, her relationship with the famed Batman villain is still a huge part of her identity. It’s where she came from and even when she’s on her own she still very much carries the baggage of what the relationship ultimately did to her.
With that in mind, one wouldn’t be surprised if Jared Leto’s Joker popped up in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The core premise of the film revolves around her finding new friends in the wake of her breakup with Leto’s Joker, who we saw in Suicide Squad.

If you were hoping to see more of him, though, then you’d better de-escalate your expectations, as according to star and producer Margot Robbie, he won’t even be appearing in as much as a cameo in the film. If the trailer’s anything to go off of, we’ll get a drawing of the character, but not much else.
Ever since it became clear that Warner Bros. was going in a different direction with their DC Extended Universe, Jared Leto’s future has seemed a bit…uncertain. The film Joker featured an all-new take, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn isn’t a fan, and by and large, fans don’t seem to be nuts about him either. With The Suicide Squad acting as a reboot of sorts, does that mean we’ll be getting a different Joker in this world?
With that in mind, it would essentially have Birds of Prey be the first official appearance of Harley Quinn, depending on how they play things.
