I kid you not, earlier today, I revisited the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot trailer, and if there was one thing that really stuck out to me about that thing, it’s Justin Long’s voice. If you’ve seen Justin Long, you know he has a fairly normal voice, and if you’re a Kevin Smith fan, you know he famously put on a faux-raspy voice for the film Zack and Miri Make a Porno, where he played a gay porn star.

In my head, I thought “how lazy is he that he’s putting on the same voice for this new character?” And then I moved on with my life. But earlier today, Smith put out a video with Vanity Fair, where he broke down fan theories, and one fan theory points to that character, saying that it actually is the same character from Zack and Miri.

Interestingly enough…Smith confirmed the rumor!

“This is true. He is absolutely right. That is me trying to retcon Zack and Miri into the View Askewniverse so I can say ‘All those kids, they knew these kids as well.’ So that would mean that Dante and Randal might have watched a porno that Zack and Miri made in the end credits.”

But…what about the fact that Smith doesn’t actually own the rights to Zack and Miri?

“Justin Long is playing the same character, but we never took the time to say that when we were making the movie. So when we were shooting the scene we were never like, ‘Hey, he used to be a gay porn story, but now he’s a lawyer.’ Instead, we just had a scene where every gay reference he made stuck out like a sore thumb in the court of law…Technically, I don’t own Zack and Miri, so I was trying to do this on the downlow.” 

So, there you go. Another reference to the canon of Smith movies, and while it may not ever be fully official, you’ll know that Long is pretty much reprising his role as Brandon St. Randy.
