Jenny Slate is currently in negotiations to join the Venom movie. This news comes courtesy of the folks over at Variety, and according to the outlet, she will play a role of a scientist. Sadly, not much else is known about her role, or what importance she’ll play in the overall plot.
That wasn’t all the outlet revealed. The last casting buzz we heard revolved around Michelle Williams, who was in talks to play a potential romantic love interest. The report states that she is officially on board alongside Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy.
Between comedic work in shows like Parks and Recreation, animated films like Zootopia and Secret Life of Pets, and her more dramatic work in more indie fare like Gifted, Slate has proven to be a great addition to any film.
The Venom film is set to take place within the same universe as Spider-man: Homecoming, though the studio has made clear that Spider-Man himself (nor any of the Avengers) won’t actually show up in it. That being said, Scorpion — who appeared in Homecoming — is rumored to be a big player in this film.
No doubt, Sony is hoping that, given the right amount of success, Marvel Studios would allow their universe and this universe to interact in a more real way. However, until then, you can pretty much view this as a similar situation as the MCU and the Marvel Netflix series. They take place within the same world, and Venom may mention Spider-Man, but don’t expect anyone to actually pop up.
Venom hits theaters on October 5, 2018.
