Joaquin Phoenix Was Toying With The Idea Of Playing A Comic book Character Years Ago

Joaquin Phoenix was rumored for the role of the Joker long before confirmation came earlier this week. As it turns out, Phoenix had been thinking of a project such as this for quit some time. While speaking with Collider, the actor revealed that years ago, he spoke with his manager about a project similar to his upcoming Joker film.

“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’ And I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done.’ So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said ‘I’ll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.’ And I said ‘I’m not gonna go, I can’t go to a general meeting.’ So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character.’ I felt like you could get something on screen.”

I think most fans are happy with Phoenix’s casting, or at least intrigued enough by it to stay optimistic. I know I am very interested in it, partly because I think Phoenix has the right mindset to bring us a great Joker, another reason is I was never really on board with Jared Leto’s iteration. Phoenix is both a good enough actor, and also has that “weird actor” attribute that some may say is essential to playing the character.
