Joe Bell Trailer Features Mark Wahlberg Dealing With Aftermath of Gay Son’s Suicide

Joe Bell starring Mark Wahlberg

Bullying is a harsh reality for many teens. It is especially rough for gay teens in schools where they are not yet accepted.

In a new drama Joe Bell starring Mark Wahlberg, he plays a father who didn’t take his bullying against his son seriously. Once the son committed suicide, he reflects on the loss of his son by marching across America to speak out against bullying.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Joe Bell tells the intimate and emotional true story of an Oregonian father who pays tribute to his gay teenage son Jadin, embarking on a self-reflective walk across America to speak his heart to heartland citizens about the real and terrifying costs of bullying.

The movie also stars Connie Britton, Reid Miller, and Gary Sinise. Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) directed the movie from the script written by Diana Ossana and Lary McMurty (Brokeback Mountain).

This is a fascinating true story of 15-year-old Jadin Robert Joseph Bell, who died back in 2013. It sparked a national profile on youth bullying and gay victimization in bullying. The father, Joe Bell, trekked across the continental United States within two years to spread the anti-bullying message and launched Faces for Change, a nonprofit anti-bullying foundation.

Roadside Attractions releases Joe Bell in theaters on July 23.
