John Boyega Doesn’t Care If His Protesting Ruins His Career — Filmmakers Show Their Support

John Boyega puts his career on the line to take a stand.

People don’t like it when actors get political. Whenever some big star expresses their support or admonishes some political figure, it doesn’t take long for some fan to yell out something along the lines of “Stay in your lane.” Simply put, people don’t like their actors sharing their opinions and generally like them to remain entertaining on screen. But sometimes get too big for actors (who are people) not to express themselves. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, companies have shown their support for Black Lives Matter, and many actors have done the same.

One actor who has really lit up the week is John Boyega. The Star Wars actor took to the streets of London alongside countless protestors and cried out on a megaphone.

“We are a physical representation of our support for George Floyd,” Boyega said in his speech. “We are a physical representation of our support for Sandra Bland. We are a physical representation of our support for Trayvon Martin. We are a physical representation of our support for Stephen Lawrence.”

Boyega continued: “I’m speaking to you from my heart. Look, I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this, but f*** that.”

Luckily, it doesn’t sound like Boyega will be out of the job any time soon. As soon as videos hit the net, he was met with an outpouring of support from behind-the-camera talent. Among them were J.K. Rowling, Jordan Peele, Cathy Yan, Matthew A. Cherry, and Olivia Wilde. Lucasfilm voiced their support, saying “we stand with and support you, John Boyega.”

You can see the tweets voicing support down below.

Of course, this whole situation is far from over, but hopefully, these are steps toward progress.
