After his crime drama based on true events with Body Brokers, John Swab stuck with the crime drama genre with the fictional narrative film Ida Red.

This crime indie film used many cast members from Swab’s previous films to tell a story about a son resorting to violent crimes to help get the family’s dying mother out of prison.

The film stars Josh Hartnett (Wrath of Man, Penny Dreadful), Sofia Hublitz (Ozark), William Forsythe (The Devil’s Rejects, Raising Arizona), Deborah Ann Wolf (True Blood), Frank Grillo (Boss Level, The Purge franchise) and Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Frozen River).

Here is the official synopsis for Ida Red:

Crime boss Ida “Red” Walker (Oscar winner Melissa Leo) turns to her son, Wyatt (Josh Hartnett), to pull off one last heist to get out of prison. But with the FBI closing in, Wyatt must choose between family and freedom in this high-octane thriller.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director and writer John Swab on his latest project with Ida Red. We discussed on how Body Brokers inspired and transitioned into this film project. Also, we talked about his love for crime dramas, using Tulsa as the backdrop for many of his movies, and constantly working with the same actors on his projects.

John Swab is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which he ran away from home at the age of fifteen. He lived on the streets amongst criminals and fell into the dark hole of drug addiction with crack and heroin. He turned his life around, and now six years sober. His films are based on themes and events from his life that included addiction, abuse, crime, and redemption. He made several films based on these themes and crime genres with Let Me Make You a Martyr, Run With the Hunted, Body Brokers, and coming soon with Candy Land about the underground world of truck stop sex workers.

Ida Red is currently playing in select theaters, On Demand, and available digitally today.
