John Wick Director Chad Stahelski Helming Original Urban Fantasy Flick Arcana

John Wick director Chad Stahelski to spread his wings with urban fantasy film Arcana.

Full-on fantasy films based on no pre-existing material are pretty rare. I mean, they aren’t unicorns or anything, but due to their high-budget nature, studios are rarely willing to risk the money on gambles. If you have a novel, you have source material that could bring in a wider audience. If there is no source material, you’re basically starting from scratch. The last one I can remember that made any sort of splash was Bright on Netflix (Project Power seems a bit more superhero to me).

Now, it sounds like we have another promising feature on the way that will delve into fantastical things. According to Deadline, Lionsgate has acquire a brand-new urban fantasy spec script. The film goes under the name Arcana, and it’s penned by Predators screenwriters Michael Finch & Alex Litvak. And, to be clear, that’s the cool Predator movie from 2010, not the most recent one. But that’s not the most exciting part.

The screenplay with be developed for Chad Stahelski, who continues to kill it as the director for the John Wick series. The outlet describes Arcana as a “gritty urban fantasy set in the hidden world of magical clans.” Finch and Litvak will serve as executive producers of the project. Interestingly enough, the duo recently also sold a script called Versus to David Leitch’s production company, who is known for his work with Stahelski on the first John Wick film.

Personally, I’m excited for Stahelski to take on an urban fantasy. The John Wick are standard action-thrillers. With Arcana, it’ll be cool to see him take his stunt skillset transition to something a bit more fantastical. We’ve seen these things turn into CG-fests in the past, but if we can get an extra layer of practicality added into fantasy, perhaps we can inject a whole new element into the genre.
