Johnny 5 Needs More Input, Reboot Of 80s Classic Short Circuit In The Works

According to Deadline, the 1986 film Short Circuit is getting the reboot treatment. The lovable robot that came to life, Johnny 5, will again be on an unending quest for information. Jason Shuman and Eduardo Cisneros will pen the film for Spyglass Media Group. While the film will focus on new characters, it’s likely to follow the same basic story as the original film.

Another prime example of an 80s movie the original film starred Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, along with Ally Sheedy. The story followed a military robot labeled Number 5, that became sentient after it was struck by a bolt of lightning and renamed himself Johnny 5. The robot had what some may refer to as athirst for knowledge, which he lovingly called ‘input.’ After becoming self-aware, Johnny wanted to know anything about everything and everything about anything. The film debuted #1 at the box-office

A sequel titled Short Circuit 2 was released in 1988 and had Johnny 5 being kidnapped after he and Fisher Stevens’  Ben move to New York City. The film had a poor performance at the box-office and the reviews weren’t all that great. I loved the first movie as a kid. Johnny 5 was a lovable character in a film that had a healthy dose of 80s magic. And I’m interested to see how this reboot turns out.

I also learned today that a video game based on the film exists, or at least existed at one time. Interesting.
