Joker Director Couldn’t Describe Film To Warner Bros. Marketing Team

By now, if you’re like me, you’ve ingested that Joker trailer roughly 20 times at least. Even though I’d expected this movie to be a real prestige piece from Warner Bros., the trailer was so well put together that I can’t seem to tear my eyes away from it. From the music choice to its visual style and Phoenix’s eccentric performance, it seems to be hitting all the right notes for a memorable chronicling of one man’s headfirst dive into insanity.

To me, it seems like an easy pitch to make. It follows a mentally unstable man who is pushed around one too many times, forcing him to finally take control of his life and take on the role of the Joker, who we all love to hate. But, apparently, director Todd Phillips wasn’t able to describe the movie to the Warner Bros. marketing team as The Playlist reported from CinemaCon.

The filmmaker then went on to describe the film as “a tragedy,” which seems pretty apt considering what we saw in the new trailer for the movie. As you can tell from my basic summary above (as well as the summary we’ve heard from other parties working on the movie), it seems like this movie is very easy to define, but Phillips, while on stage, prior to the footage reveal, said that whatever anyone’s take on the movie was, it wasn’t correct.

So what does this mean? Does it mean that even the basic essence of the trailer is incorrect? Does it mean there are a lot of twists and turns to be expected from the movie? I’m interested to see, as what we got in the trailer, while it exceeded my expectations, it also felt very much in line with what I was hoping to get from it.
