Joker Director Speaks On Criticism Against Film

Interestingly enough, there’s a lot of discussion going on around Joker, and it has nothing to do with whether or not the movie is good or bad (most critics seem to be in agreement that it’s a well-made character study), but rather whether or not it’s a film that will incite violence. Gun violence victims have spoken out against the film, and Warner Bros. has even made a statement on the subject.

But what does director Todd Phillips have to say about this whole deal? Did he worry about the movie being seen as some call to arms by potential mass shooters?

“We didn’t make the movie to push buttons,” Phillips told TheWrap. “I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, ‘Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film’. It wasn’t, ‘We want to glorify this behavior.’ It was literally like ‘Let’s make a real movie with a real budget and we’ll call it f–ing Joker’. That’s what it was.”

Nevermind the fact that he talked about “sneaking a real movie” in the guise of a comic book film (which really diminishes a lot of amazing work that’s been done in the genre), but based on his comments and comments from those who have seen it, it seems like this isn’t a movie that glorifies all the goings-on in the movie, but rather they are things that simply take place.

Personally, while I remain sympathetic to victims, I’ve never been a proponent to caving to censorship in media. As a country, the U.S.’s issues with gun violence go a hell of a lot deeper than just “media,” but that’s a whole other topic.
