Joker: Has Joaquin Phoenix’s Laugh Just Been Revealed?

What’s in a laugh? For most people, not a whole lot, but for the Joker, it’s certainly become one of his most defining characteristics. I mean, it makes sense, since he’s a damn clown. Why wouldn’t a laugh become a defining characteristic? Whenever a new actor takes him on, it’s often the first thing fans want to hear.

Heath Ledger’s Joker had a sort of maniacal breathy cackle and more recently, Jared Leto had an almost geriatric-sounding take. But what direction would Joaquin Phoenix be taking for the upcoming standalone film Joker from Todd Phillips? Well, there still has been no official reveal, but a recent Instagram post claims to have our first audio of Phoenix’s laugh. Take a listen.

Okay, so as with all unconfirmed sources, it’s worth mentioning that you shouldn’t take this as true. As with everything, it’s always possible for users out there to fake it, even if it does look legit with the video of the crew in the back there. But that’s enough of the disclaimer…how does it sound?

It’s funny because when we first saw Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, it had a distinct Cesar Romero flavor to it. Assuming this is true, based on this audio, it really sounds like they committed to the Romero angle, with it being sort of high-pitched and goofy. It’s a cool angle that, when juxtaposed with the gritty and grimy backdrop, could be incredibly unsettling.

But what do you think of this laugh? Do you think it’s true and if so, do you like it? Let us know down below!
