Joker Is A ‘Slow Burn’ Says Director Todd Phillips

It seems like every filmmaker and their mom is being offered a comic book movie these days. Sure, there are some who are faring better than others, but we’re seeing directors who we never imagined seeing at the helm of these superhero movies…at the helm of these superhero movies. One such name is Todd Phillips, who made his name on the backs of comedies like Old School and The Hangover.

Interestingly enough, it sounds as though he had been offered comic book movies in the past, as he revealed to the L.A. Times, but he never actually took one until Joker. Why is that?

“I’ve been offered a few over the years and my thing was always: I don’t watch those movies. It’s not because I don’t think it’s cool. It’s just like, quite frankly, they’re always so loud. It was just never something I imagined doing.”

That’s right. The dude just thought these movies were “too loud.” A very interesting perspective, and it’s one that makes everything make just a little more sense. If you’ll recall, it’s already been confirmed that his take on the Clown Prince of Crime won’t really be based on any existing source material, but rather just the idea of the character.

Another big difference is the pacing.

“You’re not starting on 11. You’ll get to 11 but we’re really starting on 2, and it goes from 2 to 3 to 4. It’s a slow burn.

“It really came from this idea: what if you just did a comic-book movie differently? We all grew up on these character studies and they’re few and far between nowadays. So it was like, ‘Let’s do a deep dive on one of these guys in a real way.’ No one is going to fly in it. No buildings are going to collapse. It’s just going to be on the ground, so to speak.”

Whether or not that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen, but it will hopefully make for a film that looks and feels completely different from every other superhero film we’ve seen our there, which is especially important, given how many of them there are these days.
