Joker Takes In $13.3 M In Thursday Night Previews, Could Break $90M In Weekend

Joker: Folie À Deux

It looks like all that controversy surrounding Joker is doing it some good at the box office. For weeks, there have been groups expressing their fear that the Todd Phillips-directed movie would essentially act as a call-to-action for disgruntled white males to act on their most horrifying impulses and commit acts of violence. All the while, predictions pegged the movie as an $80 million-opener.

Well, it looks like that free helping of publicity has done it pretty well. This past evening, it took in $13.3 million in North American preview screenings, well ahead of the $10 million projections and ahead of Venom’s own performance last year.

This puts Joker on track to take in somewhere between $80 million to $95 million domestically in its opening weekend. As I expected, all this controversy only helped to make the movie that much more enticing.

“Weeks of speculation as to ‘Joker’s’ opening weekend performance and its status as one of the most talked-about movies of the year have made the acclaimed (and controversial) film a must-see cinematic event,” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

While the critics, at 69%, seem to be a bit mixed on the film (with those disliking it really disliking it), I’d be more interested to see what the CinemaScore is for this bad boy and what general audiences think about it.
